Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD)

The Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD) is a national survey designed to provide information about Canadian youth and adults, aged 15 and over, whose everyday activities are limited due to a long-term condition or health related problem. Starting in 2012, data on persons with disabilities is scheduled to be collected every 5 years.

The survey collects information on: the type and severity of disability, use of aids and assistive devices, daily help received or required, use of various therapies and social service supports, educational attainment, labour force participation details, requirements and unmet needs for accommodations at school or work, the experience of being housebound, veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces with disabilities, internet use, methods used to access government services and sources of income.

Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS)

The Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) is a national survey designed to collect information on adults and children who have a disability, that is, whose everyday activities are limited because of a condition or health problem. PALS is funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada and conducted by Statistics Canada.

The PALS was conducted as a follow-up survey to the 2006 Census. Statistics Canada uses questions from the census on 'Activities of Daily Living' (questions 7 and 8) to identify the sample for the PALS.

The PALS provides essential information on the prevalence of various disabilities, the supports for persons with disabilities their employment profile, their income and their participation in society. PALS information is useful to all levels of government, by associations, by researchers and by non-governmental organizations to support the planning of services needed by persons with activity limitations to participate fully in society.

Data on persons with disabilities were last collected in 2001, when the previous PALS survey was conducted. However, the territories were not included in the 2001 PALS, so the 2006 PALS results are the first to include the Northwest Territories.
