On January 1, 2019 Statistics Canada estimated that 44,598 people were living in the Northwest Territories, a decrease of 0.8% (344 persons) from the previous year. The components of natural increase during this period consisted of 624 births and 252 deaths, resulting in a net increase of 372 persons.
