Human habitation dates back 7,000 years to when the Long Spear people came from the western plains to what is now the Hay River Dene Reserve. The community appeared on maps as early as 1854, but no permanent structure existed until the Hudson’s Bay Company constructed a post in 1868. The Roman Catholic Mission was built a year later, followed by an Anglican Mission in 1894 and a school and nursing station shortly thereafter. |
